Choose around the animals and the land

Plan livestock fencing for the job it needs to do.

Share the animal species, size, age, and behavior before choosing a fence. Mesh openings, visibility, bottom gaps, and gates all matter.

Horses & paddocks

Review visibility, openings, and the risk of a hoof or leg becoming caught. Horse fencing needs a different review from a decorative yard boundary.

Do not assume any wire sold as farm fencing is horse-suitable. Discuss the specific product and complete layout with the team.

Livestock & mixed animals

Cattle, goats, sheep, and smaller animals place different demands on a fence. Describe climbing, pushing, digging, and any young animals that will use the area.

Choose mesh and ground clearance for the animals involved. Open rails alone leave gaps; no single layout suits every species.

Acreage & property lines

For a boundary without livestock, prioritize the view, access, and upkeep. Mark the proposed line and discuss future uses before selecting the style.

Keep gardens, paths, equipment routes, and existing fencing in the plan.

For general planning guidance, see UGA Extension’s Fences for the Farm and Fences for Horses. Your estimate should identify the design selected for your property.

Make everyday access easier

Farm gates, pasture layout & equipment access

Plan openings for tractors, trailers, mowers, and people. Measure the clear width you need and review turning room, swing space, slope, and drainage.

Discuss perimeter fencing, paddock divisions, and routes between barns, water, and working areas. Gate locations should support how you move around the property.

Choose posts, hinges, and latches with the gate and its use in mind.

Compare a complete scope

Farm fence materials, height & spacing

An estimate should describe more than the number of rails. Confirm the materials and layout together.

What affects farm fence installation cost?

Fence length, style, wire infill, gates, removal, and access affect the installed cost. Compare written estimates for the same materials and work.

Georgia red clay, slopes, roots, and drainage need a site-specific plan. Review low spots and seasonal ground changes along the proposed line.

Confirm boundaries, easements, utility coordination, and responsibility for approvals before installation. Share any HOA or property restrictions with the team.

Keep the fence working

Farm fence repair & ongoing care

Check rails, wire, posts, and gates regularly, especially after storms. Look for loose fasteners, leaning posts, damaged mesh, and gaps along the ground.

Wood weathers outdoors and may need refinishing. Keep vegetation from loading the fence and follow the selected material’s care guidance.

For repairs, share photos of the damage and surrounding sections. If containment is compromised, make temporary arrangements for animals while the repair is assessed.

Farm fencing FAQs

Which farm fence style should I choose?

Start with the fence’s purpose. Wood board and split rail create open boundaries; wood and wire adds infill between posts and rails. If animals will use the area, review the species, size, behavior, mesh, height, and ground clearance before choosing a design.

Is wood and wire fencing suitable for horses or livestock?

Suitability depends on the exact wire, openings, framework, gates, and animals involved. Decorative wire panels and general-purpose farm mesh are not interchangeable. Tell us which animals you keep so the proposed system can be reviewed for your project.

Can split rail fencing keep smaller animals contained?

Open split rail fencing leaves gaps between rails and below the fence. Wire infill may be needed, but its mesh, attachment, height, and ground clearance must match the animals and site. Do not choose a containment fence from appearance alone.

What affects the cost of a farm fence?

Length, style, wood selection, wire infill, gates, removal, access, and ground conditions affect the price. A property sketch, photos, and approximate measurements help start the estimate. Compare complete written scopes for the same materials and work.

Can you install farm gates or repair an existing fence?

Precision Fenceworks offers fence and gate installation and repair. Share photos, opening widths, equipment access needs, and the condition of nearby sections. The team can assess whether to repair, replace, or adapt the existing layout.

Where do you install farm fencing?
