Lake Oconee Fence Planning: Shoreline, County & HOA Review
Lake Oconee is a service region, not one permitting jurisdiction. Start with your parcel record and survey. For a Greene County property, contact Building and Zoning. For a Putnam County property, contact Planning and Development. Confirm the responsible office and the requirements for your actual layout.
Georgia Power’s Lake Oconee Shoreline Guidelines say fences must stop where privately owned land meets its project boundary. Fences are prohibited inside that boundary. Do not use the visible waterline as the place to end a fence. Have an unclear boundary resolved before setting posts.
The lake-specific guidelines also require prior written authorization for work on Georgia Power land or within its project boundary. They address clearing and shoreline vegetation separately. Ask the Lake Resources office about your proposed work before clearing a route or changing the ground near the lake.
An HOA or architectural review is another step. Request the current rules for your particular lot and submit the material, height, finish, fence runs, and gates together. Community approval does not replace county requirements or Georgia Power review where applicable.
